Julio Iglesias was named “ avorite Son of Madrid” for his “brilliant and praiseworthy artistic career,
internationally recognized”, as well as for “being bornin Madrid and being a universal Spaniard”.
The title of “Favorite Son of Madrid” is awarded, by
proposal of the City council, to people born in the
Capital of Spain or not, for “their outstanding personalqualities or significant achievements and their serviceaimed to benefit, improve or honor Madrid”, according to the Municipal Regulations of the Honors.Universal Son of Madrid
Julio Iglesias was born in Madrid, on September 23rd 1943 and he reached success when he was only 24, by winning Benidorm Festival, in 1968.
Throughout his career, he has recorded and shared
the stage with celebrities such as Frank Sinatra,
Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Charles Aznavour, Plácido Domingo, among others. Julio has performed all over the world and he is the first foreign artist in the history of China who received
the prestigious Golden Record Award, in 1995.
Iglesias has been given a uinness World Records twice: in 1983, for being the artist who sold the most
albums in the most languages in history, and in 2013,for being the best-selling Latin artist in the world, with over 300 million records sold.
