Julio Iglesias and Doug Morris to Receive Honorary Degrees at Berklee Commencement on May 9th

Julio Iglesias was named “Favorite Son of Madrid” for his “brilliant and praiseworthy artistic career, internationally recognized”, as well as for “being born in Madrid and being a universal Spaniard”.
The title of “Favorite Son of Madrid” is awarded, by proposal of the City council, to people born in the Capital of Spain or not, for “their outstanding personal qualities or significant achievements and their service aimed to benefit, improve or honor Madrid”, according to the Municipal Regulations of the Honors.

Julio Iglesias was born in Madrid, on September 23rd 1943 and he reached success when he was only 24, by winning Benidorm Festival, in 1968.

Throughout his career, he has recorded and shared the stage with celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Charles Aznavour, Plácido Domingo, among others. Julio has performed all over the world and he is the first foreign artist in the history of China who received the prestigious Golden Record Award, in 1995.

Iglesias has been given a Guinness World Records twice: in 1983, for being the artist who sold the most albums in the most languages in history, and in 2013, for being the best-selling Latin artist in the world, with over 300 million records sold.

Boston, MA – April 15, 2015 – Berklee College of Music president Roger H. Brown will present Julio Iglesias and Doug Morris (CEO of Sony Music Entertainment) with honorary doctor of music degrees at Berklee’s commencement ceremony, Saturday, May 9, at the 7,000-seat Agganis Arena at Boston University. More than 900 Berklee graduates, their parents, and invited guests will be in attendance.

This year’s honorary doctorate recipients are being recognized for their achievements and influences in music, and for their enduring contributions to American and international culture. Past recipients include Duke Ellington (the first, in 1971), Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Jimmy Page, Smokey Robinson, Steven Tyler, Loretta Lynn, David Bowie, Juan Luis Guerra, Annie Lennox, Paco de Lucia, Carole King, Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, George Clinton, Plácido Domingo, and A.R. Rahman.

On commencement eve, May 8, as is Berklee’s tradition, students will pay tribute to the honorees by performing music associated with their careers at the Agganis. The concert and ceremony are not open to the public.

Julio Iglesias is the most celebrated figure in Latin music history and one of the top 10 best-selling artists in the world, with over 300 million records sold during a career that has spanned almost five decades. He has set two Guinness World Records: the first in 1983 for having sold the most records in the most languages in history, and the second in 2013 for being the best-selling male Latin artist. That year, he was also recognized as China’s most popular international artist of all time, an award presented by Sony Music China. Iglesias has sung in 14 languages and released over 80 albums. Berklee College of Music, the most important private university of music in the world, named Julio Iglesias Honorary Doctor of Music, in Boston, on May 9th . The artist received the degree during the graduation ceremony of the nearly 900 students, coming from 62 countries, of Berklee´s 2015 class.

Julio Iglesias said during his speech: “I am an artist that has sung in different languages, I’ve sung in a multitude of languages, and the most beautiful thing that has happened to me in my life as an artist is this honor from Berklee. Yesterday, I asked the President of the College how many people study at Berklee and where they are from, and he told me that 35-40% of the students are foreign. That means this open, global feeling instilled in all of you will help bring peace to the world.”

Doug Morris, CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, the drummer Harvey Mason and the singer, songwriter and producer Dee Dee Bridgewater also received Honorary Doctor of Music Degrees. In the past years, leading figures of music, like Duke Ellington (the first one, in 1971), Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, Sting, Willie Nelson, Plácido Domingo or Alejandro Sanz got this title.

The full album, MEXICO, is scheduled for release on September 25, 2015. Julio Iglesias is now preparing his encounter in Miami with his public, April 29, 2016, at the American Airlines Arena, which will open their doors to receive the Internationally acclaimed legend.
