Sports Palace of San Jose, Costa Rica. One page is hardly enough space to describe what a success Julio Iglesias was in Costa Rica. It was a magical night for the 4,000 lucky people who got to see the Spaniard perform. His greatness lighted up the stage.
Iglesias walked on stage at 8:30PM. The well-educated audience applauded for two straight minutes. Outstanding. There was no opening act, Iglesias went straight in. He talked, he joked, he danced, kissed his vocals backup girls four times, and came back in black suit and black tie. He reminded everyone he is a gentleman and that, while he likes women, “I love my wife.” Side joke here: “After 20 years and 5 children, she told me: if you don’t marry me I’m leaving you!”
He talked about Costa Rica, and he predicted that “…soon there will be thousands of Europeans living in Costa Rica. These Central – American lands are gorgeous, and with a little luck my children will be coming here, and my children’s children.
A woman in the audience shouted “you’re so hot!” and half the audience burst out laughing. Another crack went “I seem to have Alzheimer!” And he praised the beauties of Costa Rica, saying he knew the entire coastline on both the Pacific and the Atlantic side. And he mentioned the female beauties of Costa Rica as well.
For his performance – he sang over 20 songs, then got tired, sat down, stood up again, giving himself entirely to his public. He sang „Quijote,” “Ni te tengo,” “Me olvidé de vivir,” “De niña a mujer,” “Manuela” and “Bacalao.” When he sang „Hey!” he rocked the Palace. And then he did “Me va” and others, alas so little from someone who has sold over 300 million records in his life.
